So, I’ve noticed this black model who has been in almost every fashion show. I’ve seen her in photos of shows since last year’s fashion week in September. She was in many Pre-Fall shows this season, including Valentino’s, and is now in couture shows. Why hasn’t anyone been talking about her, though?
You’d think that with all this success people would be talking about her and maybe she’d be landing on the cover of Vogue or something but neither of those things has happened. There has been almost no mention of her name anywhere and it seems as if no one has noticed.
What’s more, she was featured in ads for the Prada Inside Bag. That includes photos in Vogue and videos on YouTube. Though, every photo I see of those ads has no information about who is in them. Most photos have information on what models are featured in them but most photos with her in them have nothing. I haven’t seen any articles with any information about her, except one.
Alison Syrett from Fashionista wrote an article titled “8 Models Who Ruled the Runway This Season” in which this model is mentioned. Her name is Lineisy Montero and, at the time the article was written, walked 65 shows. She was also apparently an exclusive for those Prada ads and went “…into Fashion Month as one of the buzziest (and busiest) newbies in the industry right now.” So, if she has all that going on, why hasn’t she been on the cover of Vogue or had amazing success like Cara Delevingne?
Probably because she’s black.
Lineisy Montero is one of those black models whose features aren’t “too black” for the industry. I say this because the black models who get the most work are those whose facial features aren’t very prominent and resemble those of white women. She is, however, still a black woman.
She obviously isn’t having as much a difficult time finding work as another black model might, as she is in almost every show, but the color of her skin could still be keeping people from talking about her or noticing her. We all know how bad fashion is at diversity and now how bad Vogue is at featuring non-white women on the cover as only 2 out of 12 covers did last year.
Everyone has been paying attention to women these past seasons and I’m sure you can guess who they are. Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Cara Delevingne. These for women have had amazing success this past year and are continuing to be successful. One thing they all have in common? They’re all white. Three of them are strictly models and only one is a celebrity. So I know they aren’t having all this success simply because they are famous, aside from Kendall Jenner.
Maybe Lineisy Montero just hasn’t had her moment like the above mentioned women have and the color of her skin doesn’t have that much to do with it. She probably needs to do a little more work before she becomes successful. That’s probably why no one has written much about her and I had to look for an article written in October to find out who she is.
She is in almost every fashion show, out of all the black women who have been in shows these past seasons, she has stood out the most, and she was the only black model in Prada’s ads. She was even the first model out in today’s Givenchy Haute Couture Spring 2016 show so I’m sure she will see more success. Hopefully, though, whether it’s her or someone else, we will see a largely successful black model soon because the industry is in need of some progress.
When I first wrote this article, I searched for information about Lineisy Montero but I didn’t find anything. About a week or so after publishing this, I searched for Lineisy Montero again and I found a bunch of articles on many websites about her. I was incorrect in saying that no one was writing about her, as many people are. I was also incorrect in accusing the fashion industry of racism where there was none. I’ve written a follow up article to address this that you can read here.
