Both when building new buildings and when renovating or modernizing walls, one is often faced with the question: What should the walls look like? Painting or wallpapering walls? Numerous possibilities today offer the creative mind unlimited freedom, but this is exactly what makes it difficult to make a final decision. Usually wallpapers are glued with a colored pattern, but also different neutral textured wallpapers that serve as a base for a coat of paint. Regardless of which variant you choose: The following tips are intended to provide a basic overview of the topic so that a beautiful interior design is not “spoiled for choice”.

After you have decided on the wallpaper of your choice, it is time to prepare the surface. It is generally advisable to remove old wallpaper. The easiest way to do this is to moisten the old wallpaper with water (for example with a steam engine). There are also wallpaper removers that can be applied. However, some wallpapers can also be peeled off dry. Here you have to try out what works. When it comes to wallpapering, non-woven wallpapers are the most user-friendly because they do not have to be soaked: the adhesive is spread directly onto the wall and the wallpaper is applied from the roll to the wall and pressed on without bubbles. The remainder is then cut off on the ruler or spatula – that’s it!

Other wallpapers, on the other hand, have to be cut to size beforehand and coated with glue so that they absorb it and expand. Here it is particularly important to ensure that neither drafts nor heat from heating cause the wallpaper to dry before the adhesive and to contract again on the wall: This results in unsightly gaps between the strips. If the wallpaper is not given enough time to soak, it can “grow” on the wall, which in turn leads to wrinkles. Paper wallpapers are therefore quite tricky and something for the experienced do-it-yourselfer.

Painting walls – how to do it right?

Painting walls is an art in itself. Without wallpaper, the surface should be checked carefully: Does the old paint peel off when repainted? If this is the case, the wall must be washed off and pretreated with a deep primer. Old lime paint can also be problematic because it cannot be painted over with emulsion paint. You can recognize this by rubbing firmly on the wall surface: Lime paint leaves a white haze on the skin. In this case, the wall must also be washed off and treated with a deep primer.

If there is a wallpaper as a background, it is quite simple, with the exception of a few photo and textured wallpapers. Mask everything that should stay clean with masking tape, stir the paint well, and the roller can do its work, ideally using the wet-on-wet method.
