What is bruschetta?
You may also not yet know exactly what bruschetta actually is. It is basically toasted white bread that is originally topped with tomato salad. The small slices of bread can either be cut from home-baked bread or from ready-made baguettes. This of course makes the preparation a lot easier if you want to make bruschetta yourself. Then spread the bread slices on a baking sheet and roast in the oven for a while. Meanwhile, the topping is prepared.
Make bruschetta yourself – variations for the spread
As already mentioned, the bread is traditionally topped with a delicious tomato salad. We have of course prepared the classic recipe for you once. However, there are now a wide variety of alternatives that you can also try. And why don’t you think about something yourself? There are no specific rules. The main thing is that you like it!
Traditional bread with tomatoes – The Bruschetta Original
All you need for the classic is fresh tomatoes, fresh basil, olive oil, salt and pepper. If you like to eat raw onions, you can also add some of them. Otherwise, the tomatoes are only cut into very small pieces and the basil leaves into thin strips and both are mixed together. Then add a little olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Simply spread this refreshing salad on the bread slices.
Extended classic bruschetta with tomatoes
You can make the tomato bruschetta yourself with a few small changes or additions. This makes the snack even more aromatic if the following ingredients are used. If you prefer to make your own bruschetta without garlic, just leave out the toe.
- 5 fresh tomatoes
- 1 clove of garlic
- 1 large onion
- 1 baguette
- olive oil
- Balsamic vinegar
- pepper and salt
Make your own citrus bruschetta spread
- 1 baguette
- 2 oranges
- 3/4 cup chopped tomatoes
- 1/4 cup crushed basil
- 2 tablespoons of finely chopped red onion
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of minced garlic
- 1/3 cup chopped olives
- Goat cheese
- Kosher salt
- olive oil
You can also make this bruschetta topping yourself very quickly and easily. Simply cut all larger products into small pieces, season and, if desired, let this salad stand for a while so that all the aromas of the spices can be absorbed by the vegetables. In the meantime, cut the baguette into slices, sprinkle or brush it with the olive oil and sprinkle some kosher salt on it. Bake the bread slices at 200 degrees for about 5 to 7 minutes or until it is crusty enough to your taste. Then distribute the spread and you’ve made an exotic bruschetta recipe yourself.
Make bruschetta with beans
- 2 cups white beans, drained
- 2 plum tomatoes
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 2 fresh sage leaves, finely chopped
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
Tomatoes are also required for this bruschetta recipe. Although plum tomatoes are recommended here, you can of course use any other variety to bake bruschetta with tomato. Cook the onion, garlic and sage for a short time in olive oil in a saucepan. Then mix the whole thing in a bowl with the remaining ingredients and cover the toasted bread slices with them.
Make bruschetta yourself without tomatoes – recipe with mushrooms
- 200 g mushrooms
- 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
- 1 sprig of thyme, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- salt and pepper
Fry the garlic in hot olive oil and then add the chopped mushrooms. As soon as the mushrooms are soft (but still have bite), season with the thyme, salt and pepper. Spread the delicious spread on the bread. complete!
Make your own bruschetta with mozzarella
If you want to prepare bruschetta with mozzarella, you can use the original recipe and the second variant with tomatoes. Simply cover the baked bread with mozzarella slices or mix the spread with small pieces of mozzarella. In principle, that doesn’t matter. It is best to combine with basil, but leave out the onions. In the end, however, that is also a matter of taste.
Make your own bruschetta with zucchini and salmon
- 8 slices of bread
- 180 g salmon fillet without skin
- 2 zucchinis (200 g each) cut lengthways into slices
- 1 small shallot
- 120 ml of olive oil
- 1/4 cup fresh, shredded dill
- Juice and grated zest of a lemon
- Sea salt and pepper
Mix 80 ml of the olive oil with the dill and the lemon peel. Brush the salmon with a total of 1 teaspoon of this dill oil and season with sea salt and pepper. Grill the salmon on a grill for two and a half minutes on each side. The inside should still be pink afterwards. Also brush the bread slices with oil and toast them on the grill. Now rub the zucchinis with the oil and grill them in the same way. Spread the salmon on the bread slices first, then the zucchini slices, add the lemon juice to the rest of the dill oil, which you also season with salt and pepper. Spread this lemon oil over the bruschetta and you are ready to serve.
White bread or whole wheat bread?
Although white bread is traditionally used for the bruschetta starter, that doesn’t mean you can’t use whole grain or mixed bread as well. That too is purely a matter of taste and shouldn’t prevent you from making bruschetta yourself. Here, too, there are now a wide variety of ready-made varieties to buy in the bakery and supermarket, so that time can also be saved here.
Make bruschetta yourself – recipe for white bread
But if you value white bread and also want to make bruschetta bread yourself, you can use the following recipe for this purpose. With the following ingredients you can make a delicious bruschetta dough yourself, which makes the starters all the more delicious.
- 950 g flour
- 1/2 cube of yeast
- 600 ml of lukewarm water
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 2 teaspoons of salt
Put the yeast in a bowl and dissolve it with the help of the water and oil. Then add the flour and salt and knead until a smooth dough is formed. Then dust with flour and cover in the same bowl and let rise for 45 minutes in a warm place. Then knead the dough again, quarter it and shape it into four small loaves of bread. These also have to be covered, but only for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220 degrees and sprinkle a baking sheet with flour. Cut each bread several times with a knife and bake for 30 minutes. It’s that easy to make your own bruschetta in the oven.
