Many people know that the onion is effective against coughs. That’s why we’re starting with a simple onion stock, which you can make in a number of different ways. The onion contains essential oils and sulphides, which not only help the patient to cough up, but also have anti-inflammatory effects and soothe the mucous membranes. You don’t even have to boil the onion juice if you make the cough syrup yourself, as this will protect the valuable ingredients of the onion. If you would like to make your own cough syrup for children and adults, you will make the right choice with onion cough syrup. You only need two ingredients:

  • 100 g red or white onions, peeled
  • 150 g sugar (brown sugar and rock candy are also suitable) or honey

If you want to make onion juice, it is advisable to cut the onion as finely as possible. This allows more juice to come out of them and in less time than if they were just roughly cut. It also removes the juices from the onion pieces and liquefies in the process. For this purpose, the mixture should rest for several hours, preferably overnight.

  • 200 ml of boiling water
  • 50 g thyme
  • 25 g sage (half the amount given for a less drying effect)
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 6 tablespoons of honey

Put the herbs in a suitable container and pour the boiling water over them, after which you let everything steep for 15 minutes or a little longer. In the meantime, you can squeeze the lemon. Remove the sage from the prepared tea so that it does not become too bitter. Let the tea rest for an hour. Then remove the thyme using a fine sieve and add the honey.

Sage for cough syrup, but not for dry throats

Make thyme-sage cough syrup yourself and use it correctly:

Keep the homemade cough syrup in a boiled glass bottle in the refrigerator for no longer than 3 days. Because of its short shelf life, it is better to make smaller quantities of sage and thyme cough syrup yourself. Take 1-2 tablespoons of the juice a maximum of five times a day.

  • 2 handfuls of ribwort leaves
  • 1 handful of thyme sprigs
  • 250 g honey

Chop the herbs as small as possible and add 3 tablespoons of both to a saucepan with the water. Let everything stand for about half an hour, stir in the honey, heat the brew slightly and then let it cool down again. Repeat this two more times. In principle, you have already made your own cough syrup with it. Finally, strain the syrup into a clean container.

If you want to make cough syrup yourself, but without boiling, then leave out the thyme. You should also plan a long preparation phase here. So if you are sick right now and need a cough syrup, this recipe is not for you. But you can prepare it before the cold or flu season, for example, so that you have it ready to hand in the event of illness. This is how it is done:

  • 20 ml of water
  • 4 handfuls of ribwort leaves
  • 500 g sugar (or honey)
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice

Layer the ribwort plantain with sugar and let it rest for 2 months

Wash the leaves and cut them into thin strips. Take a clean, sealable vessel and layer these strips with the sugar or honey in it – first a layer of leaves, sprinkle with sugar, then leaves again, etc. Complete the layers with a generous amount of sugar or honey so that all leaves are covered are. Seal the jar and keep it for two months in a dark place where the temperature fluctuates as little as possible.

Then you can open the glass and briefly heat it in a water bath while gradually stirring in the lemon juice and the water. Let the syrup sit for another two hours, after which you can strain it and store it in clean glass containers.

Perhaps you are one of those people who already swear by ginger and regularly make tea to boost your immune system. But has the idea of ​​making a cough syrup ever occurred to you? If not, then it is high time you did! We explain which ingredients you use to make such a cough syrup yourself in the Thermomix. However, if you do not have a Thermomix, simply choose the variant below, for which you do not need one. It is best to use high quality organic products.

  • 1 liter of water
  • 300 g ginger
  • 500 g honey (liquid)
  • 5 lemons

Make effective ginger cough syrup yourself for children and adults

Stir everything well and pour the cough syrup into boiled bottles.
