For the charming look you practically need two baked box cakes made from the same dough. You can use any sponge cake recipe that you like best. For the great contrast, some food coloring or cocoa is used. Regardless of the recipe you choose, be it a lemon or sand cake, the principle is identical. First bake the dough for the first cake, from which you will later cut out the hearts. With the exception of the cocoa or the food coloring, you need the same ingredients for the two batches. As soon as the colored cake is baked and cooled down, cut out the hearts with a cookie cutter of the desired size and set them aside.

For a delicious sponge cake with a heavenly orange scent you need the following ingredients:

  • 400 g of flour
  • 375 g butter, soft
  • 375 grams of sugar
  • 7 eggs
  • 100 ml orange juice
  • grated peel of an organic orange
  • 1 packet of baking powder
  • vanilla
  • pinch of salt
  • Food coloring of your choice
  • Fat and flour for the mold
  • Icing sugar for dusting

For the two cakes you have to cut the ingredients or the dough in half. Put the sugar, butter, vanilla, salt and the orange peel in a bowl and stir everything until creamy. Stir in the eggs one after the other, alternating with a little flour each time. Mix the remaining flour with the baking powder and add it to the other ingredients. Finally stir in the orange juice. Put the dough in a greased and flour-dusted loaf pan (25 cm). Bake the heart cake at 175 degrees top / bottom heat for about 45-50 minutes. Proceed as described above.

If things go fast, you can simply use marzipan cane for the heart instead of dough. Cut them into small pieces and knead them with cocoa or baking color and some powdered sugar. Then form a roll out of the marzipan mixture and cut a notch in the middle. Now you can slightly round the notch with your fingers and shape the underside of the roll into the point of a heart. Put the finished heart roll in the middle of the dough and spread the remaining dough on top.
