10 garden furniture designs 2019 that create a living room feeling
Even with the January editions of the furniture trade fair “Maison & Object ”and“ IMM Cologne ”in 2019 focused on outdoor furniture, as the manufacturers reacted to a sharp rise in customer demand. Many established brands presented their outdoor furniture collections for the first time at both trade fairs. There were not only tables and seating furniture, but also shelving systems and innovative outdoor textiles. Here are 10 of the most impressive new garden furniture designs of 2019 that will bring that living room feeling to your garden.
“String” outdoor shelves by Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström
The String shelving system is one of the most famous Scandinavian design products of the last century. Now, for the first time in 70 years, the modular design by Nisse and Kajsa Strinning can be used both outdoors and indoors.
The String Outdoor shelving system has a newly developed coating made of aluminum-zinc, or Aluzinc for short. This makes the steel resistant to moisture and rust. The floor panels are now hot-dip galvanized to prevent corrosion.
Outdoor rugs from Nanimarquina
The first outdoor carpet collection from the Spanish brand Nanimarquina is intended to bring the living room atmosphere outside. The ones at Maison & First unveiled in 2019, Objet’s collection features some of the brand’s successful rug designs, including the Shade Palette ombré rugs and the Tres Texture range. The new design by the designer of the same name, Nani Marquina, is called Oaxaca and combines floral and checkerboard patterns. All carpets are made from PET plastic, although they don’t look like it.
“We were surprised that PET offers aesthetic and tactile properties similar to wool,” said Marquina. “PET also shows the same behavior in terms of fire resistance, but offers excellent resistance to water and UV radiation.”
Linear dining furniture for outdoors by Thomas Bentzen for Muuto
The Danish brand Muuto has presented its first garden furniture designs, namely a table and bench set by the Copenhagen designer Thomas Bentzen. The furniture from the Linear collection is based on the classic picnic table or bench and is made of powder-coated steel. In line with the Scandinavian design, the garden furniture is characterized by clear lines and folded edges. The table top is hot-dip galvanized and weatherproof. The series is available in black, cream, brown and green.
Outdoor fabrics by Karina Nielsen Rios for Kvadrat
The Danish textile brand Kvadrat supplies many of the world’s leading furniture companies with fabrics. The introduction of the first outdoor textile collection could pave the way for even more designs for the outdoors.
The new outdoor fabrics were developed with the Copenhagen-based designer Karina Nielsen Rios and are made from a highly durable, flame-retardant polyester thread called Trevira CS. They are suitable for all outdoor areas, including rooms with high humidity and chlorine, such as whirlpools and pools.
“In addition to the technical properties, the material is also characterized by a soft feel compared to other outdoor fabrics and offers exceptional color brilliance,” said Kvadrat.
Indoor-outdoor by Bodil Kjær, reinterpreted by Carl Hansen & Sun
In addition to new garden furniture designs, models from the past are also being reinterpreted by many manufacturers. This also includes “Carl Hansen & Son ”, who recently added the designs by Danish architect Bodil Kjær to his collection. The indoor-outdoor collection consists of warm teak that can withstand the changing weather conditions outside.
“Teak has a warm reddish brown color and is extremely durable due to its natural oils,” said Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son. “The wood requires minimal maintenance and takes on a nicer color over time if you don’t oil it.”
Kettal outdoor kitchen
Kettal, the outdoor furniture brand, has expanded its portfolio to include an outdoor kitchen that takes outdoor cooking to the next level. The kitchen presented in 2019 is made of aluminum and is optionally equipped with teak cabinet doors. It has a sink and hob and has space for a wine cooler or fridge. There is also a matching serving trolley that offers additional contact surface.

The Kettal collection also includes a range of wicker furniture designed by Patricia Urquiola. The Vimini collection relies on the classic Basket Chair, which was designed by Nanna Ditzel in the 1950s, but gives it a modern twist. The design combines a curved seat with large colorful cushions and wooden legs.
Liz by Ludovica Serafini and Roberto Palomba for Expormim
Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor was the inspiration for this garden armchair, which was designed by Italian architects Ludovica Serafini and Roberto Palomba for Expormim. It consists of a tubular metal frame covered with fabric and an upholstered seat and backrest.
“Liz is a project inspired by the 1950s style,” said the designers. “The elastic cover fabric creates a play of stability and lightness.”
