Sooner or later, most people get gray hair. Instead of running away from the inevitable, heartbreakers like Eric Dane and Pierce Brosnan have long recognized it: gray hair makes men attractive! Check out what some of Hollywood’s most famous gray-haired actors look like.
Then: This is what George Clooney looked like in the 1980s. You may be less familiar with this version of the actor, but before ER, Ocean’s Eleven, and Gravity, he wore dark brown locks.
Today: The term silver fox was practically created for Clooney. The actor hugged his graying hair when he was just beginning his film career, and it has become his trademark ever since.
Then: We first met Matt Leblanc’s dark hair in Friends when he was Joey Tribbiani. Little did we know he dyed his hair. “I think it was in the second season of Friends when I got gray hair on the sides, so they started coloring them,” Leblanc said on the “Late Late Show with James Corden”.
Today: The actor proudly showed off his gray hair as he said goodbye to Joey forever after his spin-off was canceled. His reason? He just didn’t want to bother coloring his hair anymore.
Back then: As a young actor, Richard Gere had full, thick, dark hair, which he wore in films such as “A Man for Certain Hours” (American Gigolo) and “An Officer and a Gentleman”.
Today: When Gere appeared alongside Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, the actor already had wonderfully gray hair. These days, Gere’s hair is more white than gray and he wears it with pride.
Then: Patrick Dempsey was known for his thick brown hair when he rose to be a popular teen actor in the 1980s. Years later, the actor stole the hearts of the audience as Dr. Derek Shepherd – known as McDreamy – in “Grey’s Anatomy”.
And now, over the course of Dempsey’s 10 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, his hair got grayer. Now he’s sporting a cool salt-and-pepper look. Fun fact: his wife is a hairdresser and cuts his hair.
Then: Hugh Grant’s wavy brown hair was one of his trademarks as he rose to be a popular romantic comedy star in the 1990s.
Now: A few years ago, the British actor decided to fully accept his gray hair and we think that was the right decision.
Back then: Since his breakthrough in The Wonder Years, Eric Dane always wore his hair cut short.
Now: Around the time Dane got into Grey’s Anatomy, his hair was going gray. But he was on the show for six years so it seems like fans were into it.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Then: When Jeffrey Dean Morgan made his debut on Grey’s Anatomy as a recurring guest star Denny Duquette, he already had a gray beard, but his hair was dark brown.
Now: The star’s gray beard is iconic now and he seems to accept the salt and pepper on his head too.
Back then: A fresh-looking Steve Carell appeared on the scene in 2005 thanks to “Das Büro” (The Office). Its clean look was nice, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Now: Since leaving Dunder Mifflin, Carell has matured in both his career and looks. The actor has taken on more serious movie roles lately and also started wearing a gray beard and hair combo.
Then: When Anderson Cooper started his television career in his 20s, he had ashy hair, but we would hardly call it gray.
Now: Cooper says he got gray hair in his 30s and now, at 52, it’s completely silvery white. Even if the TV presenter is now known for his silver hairstyle, he says that he misses his brown hair.
Back then: From “Remington Steele” to “James Bond”: Pierce Brosnan’s perfectly coiffed dark brown hair helped him achieve a status as a heartthrob that he has maintained for decades.
Now: At 66, Brosnan is just another Hollywood star proving that you can become even more attractive with age and gray hair.
Back then: The “Chicago Fire” star has been in the limelight since the mid-2000s and back then his hair was a deep, dark brown.
Now: At only 38 years old, Kinney is almost completely gray and wants to remind us all that it is not that bad. In all honesty, we think it looks even better this way.
Back then: Idris Elba started acting in the 90s and had a simple haircut with a goatee – a look that he still maintains today.
Now: In contrast to then, his beard is now gray. But that doesn’t hold him back. In 2018, Elba was named the “Sexiest Man Alive” by PEOPLE – with gray hair and all the trimmings.
Then: Early in his career, Josh Duhamel kept his naturally dark brown hair cut short and neatly.
Now: At 46, Duhamel welcomed aging and let his hair turn gray on his temples and sides.
Then: Jeff Goldblum looked like a movie star even then. His thick hair rivaled Elvis Presley’s.
Now: Instead of resisting the inevitable, Goldblum has become a full silver fox in recent years. We think it was the right decision.
Jon Bon Jovi
Back then: Jon Bon Jovi said goodbye to his feathered bangs and curly hair in the early 90s, but the rock star continued to take to the stage with shoulder-length, sandy-blonde hair.
Now: The musician has adopted his natural gray hair and has become a real silver fox.
Then: Tom Hanks ‘natural brown curly hair can be seen here while attending the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in 2010.
Now: Hanks has slowly turned gray on the sides for years. But when he showed off his new white beard on the red carpet at the 2019 Governors Awards, we got a fuller picture of how elegant a man with gray hair can look. He also wore glasses with a transparent frame. Well done sir!
Then: Michael Keaton smiled when he appeared on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 with his signature short brown hair.
Now: Since the transition to gray, the actor has been wearing his hair in a super-short length, which better conceals his receding hairline.
Then: The actor came to the TV Week Awards in 2006 with his dark brown hair styled into his famous hairstyle.
Now: Since then, Chris Noth has gradually incorporated his gray hair into his look, but his bold brows have remained dark.
Back then: Alec Baldwin wore his dark brown hair at the Tisch School of the Arts Annual Gala 2006 in his signature, gelled hairstyle.
Now: The actor has recently preferred the messy look, which shows off his hair in gray and brown.
Back then: Over the years, Brad Pitt has tried very different hairstyles. But the one thing that stayed constant? His blond hair.
Now: Pitt’s facial hair turned gray years ago, and the actor knows how to show it off with pride. But at the premiere of “Ad Astra” we saw his temples turn gray for the first time. We’re super curious to see what he’s going to look like with gray hair in a few years!
Back then: Ben Affleck hasn’t changed his hairstyle much since his “Good Will Hunting” days.
Now: But lately his beard has turned gray and the actor has been seen with a silver streak in his hair.
Then: The Spanish actor became famous in 1998 for “The Mask of Zorro” when he still had dark brown hair.
Now: Banderas has aged like a good wine and is slowly turning gray at the temples. But in 2017 in Cannes he showed himself with a white and gray beard and reminded us that Zorro is now over 60.
Then: When we first met Ford as Luke Skywalker, the actor wore light brown hair.
Now: Ford has never shied away from showing its silver fox status. He even refused to dye his gray hair for the 2008 Indiana Jones series remake.
Robert De Niro
Back then: From “Taxi Driver” to “The Godfather – Part II” – when De Niro rose to Oscar-suspect fame in the 1970s, he did it all with curly brown hair.
Now: De Niro, now in his late 70s, has been gray since the 90s – now also with a white beard. And he never looked so happy.
Back then: Douglas grew up in front of the camera and always wore dark blonde hair, similar to his father Kirk Douglas. It wasn’t until the late 1980s that his temples began to turn gray.
Now: The “Wall Street” actor is now 76 years old and his hair is completely white. We are sure that his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones is okay with this.
Back then: When Olyphant became famous in The Broken Hearts Club in the 1990s, he sported a casual grunge look and medium-length, wavy hair.
Now: Olyphant’s career has only got better with age, thanks to “Damages”, “Santa Clarita Diet” and “Fargo”. Maybe it’s because of the gray hair that he’s gone over to so effortlessly and stylishly?
