Design classic: The chair of the James Bond villain is experiencing a revival

Design classic chair bench modular seat

James Bond fans may have recognized it: The design classic, on which the villain Karl Stromberg from the movie “The Spy Who Loved Me” sat while he was planning the extinction of all civilization. The Pantanova chair became popular in the 1970s and achieved cult status with the Bond film. The metal chair was designed by the talented Danish designer Verner Panton. Almost 40 years later, the futuristic piece of furniture is experiencing a real revival. The Danish furniture company Montana presented the model during the “Salone del Mobile” furniture fair. The fair is an important part of the 2019 Design Week in Milan.

The design classic was originally designed for the “Varna” restaurant in Denmark

The design classic was originally designed and manufactured together with the “Panthnella” lamp for the Danish restaurant “Varna”. The eatery’s interior became popular for its bold colors and futuristic furniture and has long been a meeting place for Danish artists. The chair itself was an important element of the decor and for the most part made up the charm of the restaurant. Made of metal, with a backrest that is slightly bent back, the piece of furniture could be effectively staged both as a soloist and in an ensemble.

The design classic is available in three versions

At that time, three variants of the chair were made. “Linear” is the name of the model that most closely resembles a traditional armchair. “Convex” is the second variant that is curved a little more backwards, and with “Concave” the backrest is curved forwards, in contrast to linear and convex. These three chairs can be combined into different shapes and can, depending on the space available, create numerous living spaces. The wavy, circular or S-shaped snake seat still make the hearts of design lovers beat faster today.

Panton equipped them with soft seat cushions so that the chairs or the seat snake not only look beautiful, but also meet the highest standards of comfort. They are not only a functional addition to the steel construction, but also successfully loosen up the strict steel look and give the model a splash of color.

Verner Panton and the founder of the furniture company “Montana”, Peter Lassen, were best friends. The designer wasn’t as popular then as he is now. In terms of materials and shapes, he was very keen to experiment. At that time, however, people were more enthusiastic about Hans Wagner’s wooden chairs, which were very popular at the time. Peter Lassen supported his friend and made the production of many of his models possible. So it is logical that 40 years later his son and Panton’s daughter are working closely together to bring the Pantanova furniture series back to life.
