House facade made of wood allows “Helen Street House” in Seattle to merge with nature

In 2017 the architects from mw | works architecture + design designed a fascinating house in Seattle, USA. At first glance, the house facade made of wood is noticeable and immediately awakens the association with cosiness, warmth and comfort. The client initially replaced the rural environment east of Seattle with the dynamic and cultural life of the city. The quiet surroundings and the relaxed everyday life in your old home have made you reschedule the house again. The concern was just too big for two people and two small dogs. The aim of the renovation project for your current home was to create a place of well-being that suits your taste and is adapted to your activities.

Helen Street is north of Madison Valley and adjoins Washington Park Arboretum. What was wanted was a simple but modern structure with plain and uniform materials that could be realized with a modest budget. The house should be flooded with light and as open as possible. Nevertheless, a certain privacy and at the same time transparency to the surrounding landscape should be guaranteed. Large glass fronts made of sliding glass doors were skillfully used where more transparency was required. The owners wanted to live in a house with a nature-loving design that blends in harmoniously with the surrounding nature. The wooden house facade perfectly fulfills these requirements and allows the building to become one with the landscape.

The two-story house houses a living room, kitchen, dining area and library. Stairs lead to the private area upstairs. The upper floor, which hovers over the rest of the building, is also clad with naturally weathered cedar wood. In addition to the beautiful house facade, there is another design element that is a real eye-catcher. “Helen Street House” has a bright, green inner courtyard in the center of the site, which ensures the desired privacy also outdoors. The sunnier southern and western sides were reserved for the gardens. A green fence merges the border with the beautiful landscape.

From the great design concept to completion, this dream home was created in close cooperation with the homeowners. The end result is undoubtedly an idyllic home in harmony with nature.
