Painting and embellishing Crocs: which colors are best?

Are you finding your Crocs too boring and want to beautify them? Since the comfortable clogs are usually monochrome, they are the ideal canvas for creative projects. So how about you paint and personalize your Crocs? We now explain what you have to pay attention to and which colors are best suited.

What are crocs made of?

At first glance, you might think that Crocs are either made of hard plastic or heavy rubber. In reality, however, they are made from a material called “croslite” which is neither plastic nor rubber. It is a cell-closed synthetic resin mixture that does not emit any harmful substances and is really easy to clean. It makes sense to make the Crocs from Croslite, as the material prevents sweating and foot odor. It also enables us to wear the shoes on land and in the water. Crocs imitations, on the other hand, are often made from ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Regardless of whether you are wearing a real or a fake pair of Crocs, you can decorate them with color.

Painting Crocs: which colors are suitable?

If you want to spice up the boring shoes, you can use different colors. Choosing the right color depends on what results you want to achieve. You may not want to permanently keep the designs you paint on the Crocs. In this case, depending on your needs, you need to choose a color that is easy to remove. We summarize all the options below.

Important: If you want to paint or dye your Crocs permanently, you have to keep in mind that not every color will adhere to the material. So it often happens that you paint the clogs and the paint comes off later.

Painting Crocs with acrylics

Acrylic paint is one of the most flexible colors you can use to paint your Crocs. Acrylic paints are great for Crocs because, unlike other paints, they won’t crack, peel, or fade. With acrylic paint, you can easily change the entire color of the shoes or paint any pattern on them to give the comfortable shoes your own touch.

This is how it works step by step

Paint Crocs with pens and create a cool design

Painting Crocs is a fun activity that is pretty easy. First you need to collect all the necessary materials. So acrylic paints, brushes and something to cover the work area must already be available.

It is beneficial to use a piece of chalk to sketch your design on the Crocs before painting. This is how you make sure that you are doing exactly what you want and you won’t make a mistake. Once you’ve sketched your design, it’s time to start painting. It is highly recommended to paint in thin layers.

When you’ve finished painting one layer, let it dry before applying the next layer. Acrylic paint dries fairly quickly, so you can get back to painting in about twenty minutes.

When your design is done and you’ve applied all the layers you want, it’s time to seal the Crocs. This keeps the design intact and prevents the paint from peeling off the surface of the shoe. The best way to do this is to use an acrylic clear coat.

After the sealant is applied, wait at least 24 hours before wearing the painted Crocs. If you’re not sure if the paint is completely dry, it can’t hurt to let the shoes dry a little longer before wearing them.

Crocs embellish with spray paint

No matter whether you want to completely re-color your Crocs or embellish it with a few motifs, spray paints are also a suitable choice. However, there is a risk here that the paint will crack or break over time. To prevent this from happening, you can use a method known as hydro-dipping. To do this, fill a large container with water, spray acrylic or latex paint on the surface and dip the clean Crocs in the paint. You can repeat this process until you get the result you want.

Fabric paints are also great for Crocs. The “Crocs” brand even offers special felt-tip pens designed for use on Crocs. In contrast to acrylic paints, fabric paints are washable. Since they are washable, you can paint your Crocs as many times as you want. This is a handy option if you want to change the design regularly. However, if it rains suddenly, the paint can dissolve quickly.

For fun with children: paint crocs with watercolors

Water colors are great for handicrafts and painting with children. Are you looking for a creative DIY project for the weekend? Then cover the table and get the watercolors out to make colorful crocs with the kids. Just like the fabric crayons, you can also get rid of the watercolors quickly. Simply wash your shoes with soap and water and you’re done.

Almost all shoes can be easily painted with a marker pen. The color also lasts wonderfully on Crocs. Use different colors as desired to create colorful patterns or draw playful motifs. This variant is also best if you want to label the Crocs. In case you’re not happy with the design, the marker is pretty easy to remove with nail polish remover.
