In the first week of December, the Italian manufacturer of luxury sports cars officially presented the first Lamborghini SUV in the company’s history. It is called “Urus” and will be on the market in spring 2018. With 650 PS and a biturbo V8 under the hood, it has all the requirements to be the fastest off-road vehicle in the world.
The first Lamborghini SUV in the company’s history
The first off-road vehicle that Lamborghini ever produced is the LM002. It was produced in small series between 1986 and 1993 and only 328 copies appeared on the market. After this not so successful project for a sports SUV, the Italians invested a lot of resources in the new “Urus”. You have built a new factory with a paint shop in Sant’Agata Bolognese and hired new engineers who are only supposed to work on the development of the new off-road vehicle. The first postage types have been tested in the cold, heat and rain for more than two years in Europe, Africa, the USA and the Middle East and have traveled more than a million kilometers together.
Lamborghini SUV: “Urus” is the fastest off-road vehicle in the world
Its predecessor LM002 serves as the basis and starting point for the new Lamborghini SUV. However, so many similarities between the two models have not remained. Just maybe the fact that the engine is not in the back, as usual, but in the front. In terms of design, the former crossover was shocking 24 years ago, while the new SUV is intended to appeal to customers who want a family car and not a two-seater. The athletic strength is available. The luxury SUV impresses with a top speed of 305 km / h, making it the fastest off-road vehicle in the world. For comparison, a Bentley Bentayga reaches 301 km / h and a Porshe Cayenne Turbo 286 km / h.
“Urus” offers space for five people and, despite its 2.2 tones, should feel sporty thanks to the 650 hp and the twin-turbo V8 engine. It is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a Torsen differential that distributes the torque of up to 850 Nm between the two axles. The interior is dominated by fine materials such as aluminum, carbon, leather and Alcantara. The functional settings in the coupe such as seat positions, temperature, navigation system, telephone and etc. can be accessed on two digital TFT displays – one for the driver and one for the functions that affect the passengers. Lamborghini has reduced the buttons and dials on the cockpit to a minimum.
At the bottom of the wide center console there is a driving dynamics switch on the driver’s side. There are the different modes: Strada (street), Sport, Corsa (race) and Neve (snow), which are offered for the series models. There are also two off-road settings: Terra (earth) and Sabbia (sand), which the customer must order additionally. The base price for the Super Lamborghini SUV starts at 204,000 euros and is to be delivered to the first customers in spring 2018.
