Last month, Saint Laurent showed its Fall/Winter 17/18 collection which included a trend seen in many shows this season; riding boots. Saint Laurent’s boots, however, weren’t just any riding boots. They were tacky, sparkly, and saggy boots, which is actually an aesthetic the brand seems to be familiar with. Regardless, they already have a waiting list and they’re not even out yet.
According to an article on WWD, a sparkly pair of slouch boots called the “Crystal Diamanté slouchy boot” already have waitlists at Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman. The boots, handmade and covered in 3,000 rhinestones each, will retail for $10,000.
Both Saks and Bergdorf did not specifically say how long the waiting lists are or how many customer have called to place orders. Saks, however, did say their list included “many”.
Saks Fifth Avenue Senior Vice President and Fashion Director Roopal Patel said, “At Saint Laurent, the crystal diamanté slouchy boot had such an emotional response to it. There’s something to be said about glitz and glamour — it’s the boot of the season.”
There is something to be said about glitz and glamour. It’s tacky. As I said with the Saint Laurent Heart Coat, it works well in Hollywood, on the red carpet, and as an art piece but worn anywhere else, it’s just tacky and flashy.
So, why do these boots have a waiting list? They’re so ugly. Maybe it’s because Rihanna posted a photo (below) of herself wearing them on Instagram?
Last year in January, Rihanna posted a photo of herself wearing some $9,000 headphones from Dolce & Gabbana. The headphones then sold out within hours. Now, it seems she’s done the same thing with the Crystal Diamanté slouchy boot.
The fact that the brand made something so ugly isn’t much of a surprise, though. That’s not just because of the Heart Coat or any other tacky thing the brand has released but because fashion seems to be doing a lot of that lately.
People seem to like, and have liked for a while, ugly shoes by luxury brands. Brands make the shoes ugly on purpose and the trend has been going in fashion for a couple of years now. I don’t think is what Saint Laurent was trying to do, though. I think these boots just ended up looking tacky.
I understand that fashion can be considered art when done in a certain way and that’s what the industry is all about. It’s about design, craftsmanship, the materials used to make the products, and more. These days, though, it seems to be more about trends, being cool, getting millenials to buy your products, and getting people to post your stuff on social media.
The brand and Rihanna seem to be doing a pretty good job at that. The boots already have a waiting list and they’re not even out yet. They are still ugly, though. Pieces like this are more of an art piece or a red carpet thing for celebrities. Since they have a waiting list, though, people will be probably wearing them casually as if something like that is to be worn casually.
Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw Chiara Ferragni wearing these. Actually, I’m pretty sure she will be.
