Vogue is getting better at magazine cover diversity having increased the amount of non white people on its covers this year. The increase, however, isn’t much but it’s much better than it was before.
Fashionista does a magazine cover diversity report every year. This year the online fashion publication reviewed 153 cover from 10 leading U.S. magazines. That, of course, includes Vogue which is the most popular magazine in the world.
The magazine has increased the amount of non white people on its covers with 5 of 12 on its covers. That’s compared to last year where the magazine had non white people on 4 of 12 of its covers. In 2015, the magazine had non white people on 3 of 12 of its covers.
The increase isn’t much but it’s better than it was before. It seems the magazine is getting better at magazine cover diversity every year. The publication has one more cover featuring a non white person every year. Although, the amount only increased this year with a shared cover by Liu Wen, Imaan Hammam, and Adwoa Aboah in March.
The magazine has increased the amount of non white people on its covers but it should do better. The magazine hardly ever features curvy women on its covers. The only curvy model to have been featured on the cover this year was Ashley Graham and that was on the shared cover in March. The only other recent magazine cover that featured a curvy woman was Amy Schumer’s cover in July last year.
The magazine is the most popular magazine in the world and it should be doing more for diversity. Editor in Chief Anna Wintour always talks about how she’d like to see more diversity and she’s the one who decides who is on the magazine’s cover but she isn’t doing anything about it other than featuring a non white person on one more cover a year.
The magazine cover, however, only features people who are popular or doing something important at the moment and the most popular models and celebrities are usually white. The magazine represents where culture is and there aren’t many non white people who are popular enough to be featured on the magazine.
Regardless, the magazine is getting better at magazine cover diversity. The publication has one more cover featuring a non white person every year. The magazine just needs to do better.
