Louis Vuitton has announced that Virgil Abloh is the new creative director of the brand’s menswear, replacing Kim Jones.
According to an article on The New York Times, Louis Vuitton has announced that Virgil Abloh is the new creative director of the brand’s menswear. Abloh replaces Kim Jones, who resigned as creative director of menswear earlier this year in January. Abloh is also the first black creative director of the brand and one of only a few black designers at a French heritage brand.
Abloh released a statement saying, “It is an honor for me to accept the position of Men’s Artistic Director for Louis Vuitton. I find the heritage and creative integrity of the House are key inspirations and will look to reference them both while drawing parallels to modern times.”
Abloh is the founder of streetwear brand Off-White, which has become very popular lately, and has collaborated with celebrities like Kanye West for a while. Rumors have been circulating that LVMH has been looking at Abloh where online fashion news publication Fashionista noticed some of the company’s executives sitting front row at the Off-White Fall/Winter 17/18 show.
He was rumored to be replacing Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy. Clare Waight-Keller, however, replaced Tisci as creative director of the brand last year in March. He was also rumored to be replacing Christopher Bailey at Burberry, which Tisci replaced him as creative director of the brand earlier this month, and Donatella Versace at Versace.
Abloh has no formal training as a designer. He will continue to work on Off-White and work with West. He will also stop doing other things that he won’t be able to since he will be working at two brands.
As for continuing to work at Off-White, Abloh said, “it is for the 17-year-old version of myself, whereas Vuitton is for the 37-year-old I am today.”
Abloh’s first collection for the brand will debut at Paris Men’s Fashion Week in June.
