Versace has announced that Virgil Abloh is not going to work at the brand after rumors began circulating that he would.
According to an article on The Fashion Law, Versace has announced that Virgil Abloh is not going to work at the brand. This comes just after rumors began circulating that he would.
Rumors began circulating Thursday that Abloh was in the process of “signing a deal” to be the brand’s new creative director. Online fashion publication Glossy reported that Abloh is apparently in contract talks with the brand, according to two sources “close to the designer”.
A spokesperson for the brand released a statement saying, “this is categorically a lie. Nothing similar is happening.”
Earlier this year in February, Riccardo Tisci resigned as creative director of Givenchy. Rumors then began circulating that Tisci would go to Versace. Even a couple of weeks before Givenchy announced his resignation Tisci was said to be in talks with the brand.
The brand was reportedly trying to sign a deal with Tisci even though it declined to comment, according to an article on WWD. Tisci, however, is said to have a non-compete agreement with Givenchy and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. A non-compete agreement would keep him from working at any other brand in competition with Givenchy or LVMH.
Abloh was also rumored to be replacing Tisci at Givenchy after he resigned. Clare Waight-Keller has, however, already replaced Tisci as creative director of the brand. The brand responded saying, “Mr. Abloh was not approached by the house and is not to join the organization.”
