Kering has announced that luxury brand Tomas Maier will close by the end of 2018 just a couple of weeks after Maier himself resigned as creative director of Bottega Veneta.
According to an article on WWD, Kering has announced that luxury brand Tomas Maier will close by the end of 2018. This comes just a couple of weeks after Maier himself resigned as creative director of Bottega Veneta.
The brand’s two Manhattan stores and e-commerce site will close by the end of 2018, which about 20 – 30 jobs or so will be cut. Kering, which was most invested in the brand and also owns Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Chloé and more, said Maier would remain the owner of the brand, the trademark, and it “would do its best, over the next few months, to safeguard employment, in coordination with local unions.”
Tomas Maier was founded about 10 years ago. It became known for its swimwear and knits. Last year, the brand hired some new employees including Gautam Rajani, who previously worked at Diane von Furstenberg, as the brand’s Global Director of Sales and Business Development.
Maier resigned as creative director of Bottega Veneta a couple of weeks ago and his own brand is closing. When most designers resign from a brand they usually work on their own brands or go to another one. It is currently now known what he will do next. Maier did, however, say he is “looking forward to the next chapter in [his] life.”
He does still own the brand and the trademark, so if he doesn’t go to another brand he could relaunch his own.
As for if he will relaunch his own brand, we’ll just have to wait and see.
