The Haute Écriture Guide to Wearing Fragrances

In September I gave you a guide to buying fragrances and I hope it helped, but now I’m going to give you some tips on wearing fragrances. So many people buy fragrances and then they spray it all over themselves without knowing how to actually do it. There is a technique to getting the most out of the least amount of fragrance and I’m going to share those tips with you.

Selecting Fragrances

I wrote about this on my guide to buying fragrances but I’ll put this here as a sort of summary of what I wrote. Buy fresh, floral, or fruity scents in the spring or summer and buy warm, musky, and spicy scents for fall and winter. Using this simple tip will go a long way.

When buying fragrances, which I also wrote in the guide, you should know the difference between Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum. The scent of an Eau de Toillete isn’t as strong and can be applied more than the stronger scented Eau de Parfum.

Wearing an Eau de Toillete

So, this is where that technique comes in. When you are wearing an Eau de Toillete, you can use more but you still shouldn’t use a lot.

When applying fragrances, spray some on one wrist and rub your wrists together. There should still be some fragrance left over as you shouldn’t rub your wrists until it is gone. After you do that, rub the excess fragrance on the inside of your elbows.

Next, spray some on your neck. You can spray it either on the side underneath your jaw or directly on the front for a more subtle scent.

The reason you need to spray fragrances in these areas is because they are your pulse points. Pulse points are places on your body where you can feel your pulse. Putting fragrances on these points will help the scent fill the room but in a good way because you didn’t put too much on.

Wearing an Eau de Parfum

If you’re going to wear an Eau de Parfum, you don’t need to put it on your pulse points. As I said before, Eau de Parfum has a stronger scent than Eau de Toillete so the fragrance doesn’t need any help.

All you need to do is spray it directly on to you neck and chest. Make sure that the first time you spray it, it gets on your neck and chest as the same time. If it only gets on your neck, you can use your hands to rub it on your chest.

Bonus Tips

If you want your fragrances to last longer, you should apply lotion to your skin before putting any cologne or perfume on. The lotion will help it stay on your skin longer.

If you’re getting ready for an event or to go out, apply fragrances before you put any clothes on. This will help you follow the tips above a lot easier.

Do not spray cologne or perfume directly on your clothing, especially if it’s a light color, because the fragrance will stain them.
