Much in the way that Saint Laurent told everyone that Hedi Slimane would not be leaving, Céline is now saying that its current creative director, Phoebe Philo, isn’t going anywhere either.
According to an article on WWD, there was an “internal memo” that was signed by Marco Gobbetti, CEO of Céline, and Philo the that described how they “are more motivated and committed than ever to their partnership and will continue to create beautiful products.” The also memo addressed the fact that all the rumors about Philo leaving Céline are just that.
Back in October, when Alber Elbaz was fired from Lanvin, an article on The New York Times cited Philo’s departure from Chloé as a reason why current rumors of her leaving Céline might not just be rumors.
Then, an article on The Fashion Law said that Philo would be leaving Céline after the brand’s Fall/Winter 16/17 show in Paris this September. The article further exemplified the rumors saying,
“…our sources allege that the August 2015 report from Page Six that Philo was in discussions with luxury firm Richemont, which owns Chloé, Azzedine Alaïa and Cartier, for a position at one of their brands, may just be true. Sources close to the matter suggest that maybe Philo – but definitely a number of her team members – will end up at Alaïa.”
Alaïa then released a statement saying, “Azzedine Alaïa S.A.S. formally denies any rumours related to changes in the creative direction of the Maison Alaia”.
Luckily, for those who love handbags that look like a pillow, Philo will be staying with Céline. It’s also good that she is staying with the brand because it would be a bit ridiculous to have yet another creative director leaving a brand after Alber Elbaz and Raf Simons left theirs.
Now, everyone can just wait to see who will replace Raf Simons at Dior or who will replace Alber Elbaz at Lanvin and maybe see if Elbaz will start his own brand since that’s what fashion wants, according to this article on The New York Times. Though, I don’t expect this to be the last time we hear a rumors that say a creative director is leaving a brand before Simons and Elbaz are replaced.
