Just as I said in October after Alber Elbaz was fired from Lanvin, people are still talking about Creative Designers leaving brands. This time, though, people aren’t talking about Elbaz nor who will replace Raf Simons. People are talking about Hedi Slimane, Creative Director of Yves Saint Laurent and rumors that he has left the brand.
According to an article on Fashion Week Daily by Eddie Roche, Slimane left Saint Laurent during the holidays because of creative differences. They apparently reached out to Saint Laurent’s United States PR team to which they replied, “No comment.” Roche continued with a brief history of Slimane’s time at Saint Laurent saying,
Slimane joined the house in March 2012, replacing creative director Stefano Pilati who helmed the label for almost eight years. The now LA-based designer has been criticized by fashion doyennes like Cathy Horyn for taking the Yves out of YSL and rebranding the legendary label as Saint Laurent. But despite that and some controversially grungy collections with a fast-fashion look at a luxury price point, annual sales revenue more than doubled to about $787 million in 2014 from the time he joined the brand.
The article further explained how Slimane leaving Saint Laurent would “mark another big name exit at a major fashion house, following Alber Elbaz from Lanvin, Raf Simons from Dior, and Alexander Wang from Balenciaga”, prompting fashion websites like GQ.com to write articles about Slimane.
An article on Fashionista quickly cleared things up, though, as writers from the website reached out the Saint Laurent’s PR team too and received this statement: “Following the recent [designer] departures, [there] have been many rumors and speculations. This is clearly one more!” So no, Slimane is not leaving Saint Laurent.
Regardless of all that, there will still be rumors of creative directors leaving brands. Expect to hear much more about Alber Elbaz and Raf Simons this year, especially during fashion week, as Elbaz was seeing talking to Delphine Arnault and Dior’s next two collections will be designed by its atelier. We might also here about Elbaz’s legal issues with Lanvin, though, not many people have been writing much about Elbaz. We just have to wait and see.
