So you want to join the handbag community? Well, there’s some things you’ll have to know first. You need to know the who’s who of handbags, special terms when talking about bags, brands to avoid, and different types of leather. That may sound like a lot, but the internet has many resources to finding these things out and more. So without further ado, let’s begin with the most important thing to know when it comes to handbags.
Top Handbags on the Market
This one should be easy if you’ve taken an interest in handbags but some of you still might not know.
This is the top handbag line on the market with prices ranging from just over $10,000 to over $100,000. This is also one of the most exclusive bags not only because of its prices but because of its availability. Often times to buy a Birkin from Hermès, you have to get on a year to two-year waiting list. It’s availability may be because all Birkins are completely handmade. Everyone who loves handbags knows this and you should know it too.
This is the second most popular bag from Hermès. You can find a Kelly from around $4,500 to over $45,000. This bag is made in the same types of leather as the Birkin.
Everyone loves a good Chanel bag and you should at least be acquainted with the different names of these bags. We have the Chanel Flap Bag, the Double Flap, the Wallet on Chain, the Chanel 2.55, and the Chanel Boy Bag. These are the most popular bags that Chanel makes.
You should also know the different leather that Chanel uses which you can also find here in a guide from Portero Luxury.
Louis Vuitton Bags
Handbags from Louis Vuitton are very popular as they are usually people’s first luxury handbags. That and Coach.
The handbags to know from Louis Vuitton are the Alma, the Speedy, and the Neverfull. These bags are what you’ll see people carrying the most and probably already have seen people carrying.
There are certain words you need to know when talking about handbags. Everyone in the handbag community knows them and it will help you better understand handbags.
The silhouette of a bag is simply the shape of it. For example, the Louis Vuitton Alma has a round silhouette where as the MCM Munich has a boxy silhouette.
This is simply the metal that is used on a bag like the zipper, the buckle on a shoulder strap, or a turn lock if the bag has one.
Gussets are the side panels of a handbag that hold the leather pieces together. For example, the Celine Luggage Tote was popular for its winged gussets.
Some handbags come with little pieces of metal on the bottom to keep the bag from touching the floor if you ever put it down. These are called feet.
As you know, not all handbags are the same. There are many types of handbags but I’ll tell you the major types you should know.
A satchel, sometimes called a top-handle bag, is a bag that you would usually carry by the handles, though, many satchels come with shoulder straps. Satchels are also usually structured bags.
A shoulder bag may have handles like a satchel, but it is exclusively made for and worn on the shoulder. Shoulder bags can be structered or loose.
Not to be mistaken for a shoulder bag, a crossbody bag comes with a longer strap and is slung across your body rather than over your shoulder.
Tote bags are loose bags that usually come with open tops. Some may have a flap to close them but they will still be pretty loose.
The Major Three Handbag Makers
There are three brands that make handbags that you need to know and we just talked about them. The major three are Hermès, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton.
Handbags from these brands are the most popular and sought after bags in the world. When a new handbag comes out from one of these brands, everyone is talking about it.
Those are the most important things you should know if you’ve taken an interest in handbags. The handbags I have listed here are the most popular but there are other bags and other brands that make beautiful bags like the Givenchy Antigona or the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour. Go to your favorite brands website a take a look at their handbags. I’m sure you’ll find something you like.
