A couple of weeks ago I said Aeropostale is probably going out of business because of its low inventory and sales well after Black Friday. Now, it seems even more possible it will go out of business as the brand is now offering up to 75% off everything and its online inventory has decreased.
Aeropostale said it would close 154 stores after filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy in May. The brand has since been liquidating its inventory in those stores, offering up to 70% off everything. All sales in those stores are final as well.
A couple of months later, the brand was acquired by a retail group led by Simon Property Group Inc. and General Growth Properties Inc. The group purchased the brand for $243.3 million with a plan to keep 229 stores open. That, however, is a much lower amount than the 646 stores that would e remained open if only 154 stores were closed.
The brand has been liquidating inventory in closing stores by offering up to 70% off everything. There were many sales online during the summer but the brand started offering up to 70% off everything before Thanksgiving and on Black Friday and has been since.
Now, though, the brand seems to be offering up to 75% off everything both in stores and online. It may seem as if the brand is only doing this for the holidays but it’s not. Not only is the brand liquidating inventory in closing stores but it’s liquidating inventory online as well.
In Aeropostale’s closing stores, all sales are final which means you cannot return or exchange items. I bought a pair of jeans from the brand a couple of weeks ago and the receipt said I couldn’t return anything in stores. It did, however, say I could exchange the item online but didn’t mention anything about returns.
Now, all sales online are final as well. When you visit Aeropostale.com and click on clothing category there is a banner that says “all sales final”. So, even if you buy something online, you can’t return or exchange it.
The brand’s inventory is also lowering as well. When I wrote about Aeropostale a couple of weeks ago, it seemed the brand was only selling and manufacturing a small selection of products. Despite discounts and sales, nothing was selling out. Pretty much all sizes for all products were available. Now, only a couple of sizes for some products as well as less items are available.
Also, the brand hasn’t offered any new products this season. Where you’d expect to find sweaters, coats, and other fall and winter items there are t shirts, tank tops, and shorts. Everything that has been available all summer is still on the website. The only in season items that are available is a small selection of scarves and gloves.
It’s been said that Aeropostale will relaunch as a smaller brand after being acquired by the retail group but it seems it might not. Given the brand’s new discounts, lowering inventory, final sales, and online liquidation, the brand still might just be going out of business.
