Ad campaigns were more diverse than runways this season and for the first time ever.
According to an article on The Fashion Spot, ad campaigns were more diverse than runways this season. They were also more diverse than runways for the first time ever.
The Fall/Winter 17/18 ad campaigns featured 30.4% non-white women, which is more than the Spring/Summer 2017 ads’ 24.5%. This is the first time that this many non-white models were used. Adwoa Aboah was the only non-white model of the top 7 models to be featured in the most ads. She did, however, get as many campaigns as big models like Gigi Hadid and her sister Bella Hadid.
Women over the age of 50 were also featured in more ads than last season, however, this season’s 14 models is still less than last year’s 22.
Plus size models were the only ones that weren’t featured in more ads as this season’s campaigns only featured 10, which is the same as last season. That is, however, less than last year, which had 14 plus size models and less than Fall/Winter 15/16, which had 11. Although, plus size brands weren’t the ones who featured the most plus size model in their ads this season. Brands like Dolce & Gabbana and Vivienne Westwood featured plus size models alongside regular sized models in their ads.
The most racially inclusive brands were Saint Laurent, Coach, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Gap, Helmut Lang, and Nordstrom. Simone Rocha featured the most women over the age of 50 in its ads, which featured models that were also in its runway show this season.
Ads are not as diverse as they should be, especially when it comes to plus size models. This season’s increase in diversity, however, shows that they are moving forward with culture.
